PROJECTS

GATEWAY MALL

Date Started

September 2022

Date Completed

2024

LOCATION

Umhlanga Ridge, Durban, KZN – South Africa

Gateway Mall is one of the largest retail malls in Southern Africa. The mall uses up to 1,200 kl per day of potable water drawn from a municipal source. This yields up to 900 kl per day of waste-water which is discharged to the sewer network. To improve sustainability and water resilience, the mall embarked on a project to recycle wastewater for non-potable water demands. Maoko was appointed as the owner’s engineer to design and project manage the delivery of a 500 kl per day wastewater treatment plant. The plant can treat a combination of black and grey water to yield water suitable for cooling towers, toilet flushing, cleaning and other non-potable water requirements. It employs best-in-industry Membrane BioReactor technology for COD reduction and a fit-for-purpose Reverse Osmosis plant.

KAGISO & PHUMULANI WATER RECYCLING PLANTS

Date Started

April 2024

Date Completed

Ongoing

LOCATION

Johannesburg, Gauteng

PROJECT INFORMATION

Maoko was appointed to design and deliver water recycling plants for Kagiso and Phumulani Malls respectively. The project involved determining the available wastewater for recycling, characterizing the wastewater, designing the plant and project management of the plant delivery.
The technology employed for both plants was a containerized membrane bioreactor with downstream disinfection. The raw water was abstracted from the sewer line, upstream of the municipal connection and the treated water was disinfected prior to use and used for toilet ablutions and irrigation.

Troubleshooting of Ardagh Group Demineralization Plant

Date Started

April 2021

Date Completed

July 2021

LOCATION

Bellville, Cape Town, Western Cape – South Africa

PROJECT INFORMATION

During the most recent drought in Cape Town, 2017 – 2019, Consol Glass (Ardagh Group) made
efforts to improve their water security by procuring a 360 m3 /day demineralization plant to produce water for most of their onsite requirements. The plant was supplied by two onsite boreholes that produced hard water. However, after commissioning, the Demin plant operated sub-optimally resulting in mothballing of the plant. Maoko was appointed to do a condition assessment and troubleshooting exercise on the plant to determine the requisite corrective action. This was successfully concluded and presented to the client to inform the client’s efforts towards building water resilience.

Corporate Social Responsibility – Project Oasis

Date Started

2021

Date Completed

2021

LOCATION

Kuwadzana, Harare - Zimbabwe

PROJECT INFORMATION

As part of Maoko’s corporate social responsibility initiatives, we installed a water kiosk in the high- density suburb of Kuwadzana in Harare, Zimbabwe. The kiosk provided residents of the suburb with safe drinking water at a nominal cost. Residents of the suburb were generally without running municipal water, thereby exposing them to water borne diseases such as cholera and typhoid. The kiosk was provided in partnership with Puma Energy, and it was fully maintained and serviced by Maoko.

Cavendish Mall Water Recycling Plant

Date Started

September 2022

Date Completed

June 2024

LOCATION

Claremont, Cape Town, Western Cape – South Africa

PROJECT INFORMATION

Cavendish Mall is located in the water stressed city of Cape Town in the Western Cape. A few years ago, the city narrowly averted “day zero” which would have resulted in the municipal taps running dry. To improve water resilience, the mall initiated several projects to reduce their dependency on municipal water.
Maoko was appointed as the owner’s engineer to design and project manage the delivery of a 45 kl per day wastewater treatment plant. The plant was designed to treat black water to produce water suitable for cooling towers, toilet flushing, cleaning and other non-potable water requirements. It employs best-in-industry MBR technology for COD reduction and a fit-for-purpose Reverse Osmosis plant. The plant also integrates to existing water infrastructure which precedes this project.

Vincent Park Mall Water Recycling Plant

Date Started

June 2023

Date Completed

May 2024

LOCATION

Vincent Park, East London, Eastern Cape – South Africa

PROJECT INFORMATION

Vincent Park Mall, located in East London in the Eastern Cape, is part of a property portfolio that is undergoing water use rationalization. This exercise involves improving the water usage by adopting the tenets of a circular economy. To achieve this, Maoko was appointed as the owner’s engineer to design and deliver a 45 kl per day wastewater recycling plant.

The plant was designed to treat black water from an office tower, with the treated water designed to comply with ablutions and irrigation quality. It employs best-in-industry MBR technology for COD and turbidity reduction. Maoko did the design, preparation of tender documents (RFP), adjudication of the tenders and management of the project delivery.
